Friendship is an illusion fascinating to see,
it seems people are never what we expect them to be.
Trying always to be friendly with everyone,
but before long someone you felt was a friend is gone.
The friend who would not let you down,
is suddenly never available and never comes around.
Looking back, wondering and asking why,
with a hurt so deep inside all you can do is sit and cry.
Questions remain of what you did wrong,
an illusion not seen because of how well you got along.
Friendships start quickly but some will end,
doubts enter your mind about who is really your friend.
During visits things appear to be alright,
then suddenly your friend and you could have a fight.
When the few unkind words are spoken,
without realizing it the bond of friendship was broken.
Wanting more time than some can give,
not understanding they too have their own lives to live.
Others expect love or a new romance,
with one knowing that romance doesn’t stand a chance.
Today the term friend is loosely used,
and sometimes can lead to people feeling so confused.
Although all people do survive heartache,
there is only so much any one person should ever take.
Friendship should be a two way street,
where you both enjoy the relationship and feel complete.
When things turn toxic and cause pain,
and soon visits are filled with guilt trips you can’t explain.
Decide if the relationship should now end,
with honest memories of the friendship and not pretend.
Sometimes we have very high expectations,
which could lead to everyone suffering from frustrations.
Some very special people will come along,
through everything the friendship grows and stays strong.
When this happens there will be no illusion,
they remain a true friend; and there will be no confusion.
