Strangers in the Night

I wandered down the road completely all alone,
not knowing what the future held, still so far from home.
Thoughts kept entering my mind at a rapid pace,
then hearing someone behind me my heart began to race.

There were no street lights anywhere I could see,
suddenly feeling very vulnerable and fear consuming me.
Wanting to be capable of hearing a familiar sound,
taking further uncertain steps, while still looking around.

Every noise intensifies making me more aware,
wondering what is happening and how I should prepare.
Why did I choose this night to go out for a walk,
I wish there was someone here with whom I could talk.

An iron gate swings open slowly on my right,
when I glance over there is no one immediately in sight.
Noticing the old sign which reads all too clear,
Memory Gardens Cemetery, visitors please enter here.

I try to tell myself it is just my imagination,
chills moving up my arms reveal the real interpretation.
Should I continue walking on this road ahead,
every part of my body screaming for me to run instead.

Questioning the reality of what is going on,
unable to concentrate and my confidence entirely gone.
Hearing a wolf howling off in the distance,
it's chilling sound breaks down the last of my resistance.

Relieved when I can finally see some light,
then aware it's a lone wolf's eyes shining in the night.
Frozen with fear and no where left to turn,
the wolf starts growling causing me even more concern.

Still frightened by what I see and hear,
a calm voice says, "There is nothing for you to fear."
"I found him here abandoned and alone,
he was just a little pup then but now he is full grown."

"I'm sure Bandit is just as scared as you,
he really is harmless and their reputation is not true.”
The once fierce wolf ran over to the old man,
wagging his tail happily and licking his master's hand.

The old man told Bandit to get in the car,
saying he could give me a lift if I wasn't going too far.
Strangers in the night meeting by accident,
spending time together with everyone feeling content.

The fear of what was behind me and ahead,
reflections of this night fill me with laughter instead.
A man and a wolf wandering off all alone,
meeting briefly by chance and now are headed home.
