   Earl lived inside an old
oak tree, but he was as lonesome as any young
squirrel could be. Gathering nuts in the
early sunshine, then off to bury them, in the
ground, for another time.
Feelings of
despair hidden inside, Earl longed for a
partner who would become his
bride. Sometimes he fantasized in his
mind, dreaming daily of his true love whom
he hoped to find.
They could raise their
little family, living in a cozy nest Earl had
built high up in the tree. The limbs were all
sturdy and strong, no reason for concern if a
predator should come along.
Knowing the
nuts to bury for spring, Earl was confident
he could take care of everything. There was a
cornfield not far away, and he had found
another big apple tree yesterday.
On each
journey Earl had to make, returning home, his
little heart would start to ache. Playing tag
with his friends was fun, but he was always
all alone when each day was
done.
Crossing a road he would look
around, hoping to see his sweetheart maybe
homeward bound. Today he saw Phoebe standing
there, as gentle winds moved her silver
fur softly in the air.
Scampering quickly
to talk with her, his heart beating so fast
and his mind a complete blur. On this fateful
day his life changed, when a wedding for
Phoebe and Earl was soon
arranged.
Surrounded by their friends and
family, everyone gathered to celebrate
under a shady oak tree. Earl was glad he
would never be alone, Phoebe was always there
waiting for him to come home.
