A Distant Shore

Your naval ship ordered to a distant shore,
to a foreign country engaged in deadly war.
The pier of San Diego there in front of me,
standing alone, as your ship sets out to sea.

Waves from the ocean resonate in my ears,
talk and laugher soon interrupted by tears.
Thinking how many long months will pass by,
from this day we kissed and said good-bye.

Both aware you have to be away from me,
sworn to serve and keep our country free.
Thoughts wander into our mind and heart,
of just how long we will have to be apart.

Writing of love in every letter exchange,
not having you here really seems strange.
Longing again to snuggle here for awhile,
to glance again, and see your loving smile.

Every day waiting for the mail to arrive,
any letter from you brings feelings alive.
Reading every word over and over again,
careful in your letters never to complain.

Then finally the time I have waited for,
a call you didn’t have to serve anymore.
Telling me when your ship would arrive,
reminding me to be careful on the drive.

Joyful happiness fills every part of me,
you were returning safely from the sea.
Immediately selecting a favorite dress,
wanting especially to look my very best.

Finally held once more in your embrace,
this special time you can never replace.
Anxious, but a happy time long awaited,
soon days apart now finally celebrated.
