Boys At Play

There were days as boys we hated to see come to an end,
In our daily make believe world of fantasy and pretend.
Sometimes, playing war could be the game of the day,
Charging down the hill, with our rifle, saying, “Out of the way!”

On other days a cowboy with a stick or broom for a horse,
And always providing all of the sound effects of course.
My friends and I were so completely fearless way back then,
It’s a time I return to in my memory and can smile again.

At times we had a camera to catch all of the action,
Acting it all out though was the real attraction.
Someone would have to be the cameraman for the day,
Filming all of the live action of us boys at play.

Pretending we were playing cards in our saloon, what a sight,
But before long we all knew there was going to be a fight.
Some cowboy would always be caught cheating at cards,
And the cheater we knew always got their just rewards.

Our fists flailing and flying mightily through the air,
We tried to be careful but we didn’t really care.
We would try as hard as we could not to hurt anyone,
But suddenly someone was on the floor the damage done.

Excitement always awaited all of us each day,
To see who could die the best in our games of play.
Whether we had been shot by an arrow or a gun,
Who was really the best when the fighting was done.

Who had provided the best sound effects for their fight,
Which one of us had fallen and done it just right.
Falling off of the top of the house was very common to see,
sometimes even being shot and falling out of a tree.

Playing king of the hill who was really the best,
who was the strongest and could withstand the test.
Only one of us at the end could claim victory for the day,
Who was king of the hill, pushing all others out of the way.

What wonderful times we spent in our world of pretend,
We grew up so fast and sadly it all had to come to an end.
I fondly recall now the memories of all of those days,
When my buddies and me were just boys at play.
